Needless to say, the well-known horn-design features of past releases of CHAMP are still available, now in an even more sophisticated way through the implementation of VariFlex.

CHAMP 3.0 supports design and analysis of feed + dielectrically supported subreflector + main reflector. The combined usage of the MM-MOM scheme ensures that all RF effects are accounted for when optimizing compact antenna terminals to fulfil stringent sidelobe specification posed by the operators and ITU.

Full-sphere radiation patterns are generated in a matter of seconds, as shown here for a 130 wavelength Cassegrain system. Amplitude and phase patterns of co- and cross polar components are available, and all data can be easily exported in simple formats.

The VariFlex implementation by TICRA enables all geometric data to be described as variables that may even include arithmetic and trigonometric expressions. This provides a flexible tool enabling geometric dependencies to be maintained through an optimization. Optimization schemes include:

  • MinMax
  • Least Square
  • Simplex
  • Genetic Algorithm

The example shows how a reflector expanded in splines can be forced to attain parabolic shape.

Data exchange of optimized geometries takes places by means of STEP or IGES CAD formats.
